Snow falling on lavender

Kia ora

August is often the coldest time of the year, and today we have it – snow falling on lavender.

The blast from the south was well forecast with snow even appearing on beaches in and around Christchurch/Otautahi.

Our lavender was pruned in Autumn so should be able to withstand the air temperature of 3C pretty well.

Move into winter

Morena

As we move into winter, it is another busy period on the lavender farm. While the bulk of our pruning is complete,we still need to complete some further light pruning.

We are way behind on hand weeding with warm temperatures resulting in a lot of new grass growth – and more work!

Morena

As it does at this time of year, warm weather stimulates lavender to start flowering.

Pacific Blue is always first with the first hints of purple just starting to develop.

Grosso has some big buds this year but flowering will be a few weeks later than Pacific Blue.

beat the “winter blues”

Morena As we approach the shortest day it’s a great opportunity to reflect on how we might beat the upcoming “winter blues”. We have continued to be busy out in the fields tilling and weeding. It is amazing how the grass continues to grow; even through the early periods of winter. Our image is from December last year, about six months away, […]

Science behind the scent

Morena The science behind the scent of lavender has always been challenging. Many people can outline the benefits of lavender to them, but independently proving them can be challenging. Later in this blog we highlight some new research that provides proof of the calming effects of lavender scent. We are now in maintenance mode as winter approaches. The tasks ahead include: finishing […]

Heading into Autumn

Morena The nights are cooler, the leaves are turning – we must be heading into Autumn. We completed our harvest of Gosso late in February, but still achieved a high yield and excellent quality. This years oil will sit nicely in the fridge for  a year or so as the aroma and notes change and shift. It is now maintenance time as we […]

hard working Atom

Morena It is the first week in December, and we have had our hard working Atom tilling the edges of the rows of lavender. A great little machine, this beautifully chops up the weeds and makes it easier for our team of hand weeders to follow on behind. The lavender is doing fantastically well. The regular rainfall has helped our Pacific Blue […]
